A Question....

...and I would like your opinion.

I've made one or two mug rugs.  I like to make them because they're a fun, quick project and I enjoy sharing them with family and friends.  Here's the one I made after work yesterday...

I've been using fabric scraps from the scrap bins and it takes almost an hour to make one from start to finish.

Because I gave coworkers a mug rug, some of their coworkers have seen the mug rugs... and I now have two people wanting me to make some for them.  We're not talking one mug rug... one woman wants 50 (!) and another wants four.  They have asked how much I charge to make them.... I thought about it and came up with $10 to $15 each.

Does this seem unreasonable?

Folks reactions when I quote the $10 to $15 range for one mug rug make me wonder if I have a warped perspective... what do you think?

  1. I think it's very reasonable! It takes you an hour to make one! It's handmade and they're beautiful!

  2. $10-$15 for an hour of an artists work seems reasonable to me.
People don't realize the work that goes into quilting.

  3. I think that price range is extremely fair. People always want something for nothing. They are used to buying things made in China. Don't back down on your price.

  4. I don't know how much it is in euro's but it's handmade and if the other lady's think it's a fair price.....go for it.

  6. I think if they want hand made quality goods, they have to be willing to pay for it.

I make super-simple cloth bags to wrap Christmas presents in. The fam keeps saying I should sell them. But by the time I purchase the material (and I never ever pay full price) and sew them up, the cost is too high for anyone to consider buying them. That's just the way it is.

Your price range is perfect. Go for it. (Although some of the fun goes out when it's "work.") A quandry......

  7. I have this same problem when I try to set prices for handmade things. I think you should sell them for what you think its worth to make them. There's no point in spending he time for no return. The mug rugs are definitely worth it. You do a great job on them and they are very pretty!

  8. I agree with Debbie J. Do you really want to turn your sewing room into a 99cent sewing factory? Of course not! Making 50 mug rugs is ridiculous. These are hand-made. They are from the heart and are meant to be gifts of love. It's like homemade jam. Yeah, you can buy Smuckers for $1, but it's so awesome when someone gives you a jar of their very own. After all the hours spent picking berries, cleaning, cutting, cooking, stirring, ingredients, and jars...it's expensive! These kind of gifts say I love you enough to spend all this time on you. You can't put a price on that.

  9. The picture of that baby's face is just the perfect illustration! If the gal needs 50, do you think you could offer to teach her how to make one, then she could sew them herself? Perhaps then she would appreciate how much time, talent and effort such a project would take. She probably doesn't sew. I believe your time is worth $10 per item, plus she should supply the fabric, batting and thread.

  10. The Baby picture is perfect!! I think that price is fair, that is what they would pay on Etsy if not more. I don't think they understand the time it takes and material is Expensive!

  12. I agree with everything expressed above. Your range is fair, people don't really value crafts and the time it takes. I also don't think you should accept making 50. You will H A T E them after 10.

  14. Love the baby picture!
You are in the ball park with your price. She can pay or move on! At 10 bucks, you are not counting all of your fabrics & time. (I'm only saying what others are, but I wanted you to know I support YoU, too!)
    Hugs, pokey
