Yesterday, I finished binding the Smoky Mountain Stars quilt.
Debbie of Angel Scraps Quilting recommended a machine-sewn binding tutorial by Prudent Baby... and I decided to try it.
It worked very well and I'm quite pleased with how it turned out! This quilt is going to one of my nephews and may see hard use, I thought this would be better than binding that is hand-sewn down.

David, the recipient-to-be of the Smoky Mtn Stars quilt, is on the right and is shown with his younger brother and their mother... my sister Carol. As a frame of reference, Carol is 5'10" tall.
David's "lap quilt" is a bit larger than a typical lap quilt.
Beautiful finish, Freda! You know, it was your posts about this quilt that put me over the edge and got me making my Rocky Mountain Christmas. Now I'm thinking I have plenty of red and blue shirts. MUST.BE.STRONG!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure this will make your nephew very happy (well, at least one of them--will the other one be jealous?).
It turned out wonderfully beautiful! I love it! I will have to remember Smokey Mountain Stars for a future quilt.
ReplyDeleteI liked how the machine sewn binding worked on my quilt too. It saved a bunch of time.
Fantastic finish! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful quilt. I enjoyed the thought that this bed size quilt was a lap quilt for one of your nephews!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job on your Smoky Mountain Stars quilt! Love the scrappy look of the fabrics you chose. I'm also a convert to machine-sewn binding and have been using this application method for the past few years.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt turned out great and I'm sure that your Nephew will love it. Those boys sure are tall, makes your Sis look like she is under five feet. I bet she had her hands full when they were growing up. She looks like a very proud Mother with those two handsome Sons.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the info on machine sewing the binding.
Gorgeous finish, Freda!!!! Congratulations! I'm sure the quilt will be loved! I'll need to check out that binding tutorial! What a TALL family!!
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt for your nephew. i like the solid binding, it frames the quilt nicely. Really, is mom 510"? How tall are the boys?
ReplyDeleteLove the scrappy border you used! I had to laugh at the lap quilt quip...I made a lap quilt for my 6 foot 4 brother that is longer than a twin bed quilt...
ReplyDeleteBeautifully done. Larger lap...haha!
ReplyDeleteI have always loved this pattern and your version is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAs I've said before, I love this quilt. Just right for a big guy like your nephew.

It's simply fantastic! Great job for a great (I'm sure!) nephew!
ReplyDeleteFreda it turned out so nice. I really love it Your nephew will love it. Is'nt it great to have your sewing machine back? Hugs
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is in my dream colors.....
ReplyDeleteFive feet ten inches? Holy moley! That means the boys would be nearly twice as tall as me!
I love the border you've made Freda.
ReplyDeleteI think that your nephew will be very happy with this one, specially because of the greater size of it.
My, they are tall, aren't they? They make their mother look diminutive!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I am reading through all your post from 1 March forward - don't want to miss out on anything exciting now that I have a decent internet connection!
