Tiny Houses: Pink & Purple (cont'd)

Yes, I have way too many pink fabric scraps but it is cool using them on these tiny houses.

Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville (link) has pointed out that your fabric scraps cost just as much as the fabrics that end up in quilts.

Don't know about you but at $10/yard and up, I want to save every useable scrap.

In order to save time and keep the piles o' scraps off my desk while I'm working on the houses, I print off five sets of the six different house patterns, cutting them in half so there is one house pattern on each half sheet.

Each pattern goes into the basket with the selected fabrics on top, layered until I have 30 tiny houses ready to sew together.  This is working well so I'll keep doing this when I start back to work.  Then when I get home, all I have to do is take the set on top and start piecing.

I didn't like pink growing up because there seemed to be just one pink and that was baby girl pink.   It wasn't til I was in high school before I found "hot pink" and "fuschia" and "rose pink," etc.

However, with the right colors, even "baby girl pink" ain't so awful.

I love hydrangeas because of the pink-to-purple-to-blue shades... even the creamy whites/yellows have a pink tinge.

Even though these prints look mostly blue, they both had a lot of purple and pink... and were in the pink/purple drawer.  (And yes... a couple more"oopsies" that needed fixing.  Such is life...)

My favorite colors are pinks, purples, and cobalt blue.  I have the hardest time resisting and, after making my pink quilt...

...I have a lot of pink scraps.   They reside in a scrap bin along with purples... but they are mostly pinks.   All shades of pink...   so it is time to tackle that drawer!

I think the pink and purple scraps go together, even if they are dark...

...or have colors other than pink and/or purple on them.   

Although the green print was not in the pink/purple drawer, the blue-violet gingham was.   It's so hard sorting colors sometimes....

I do have to say I'm putting a hurtin' on the scrap bins... not much left to go back in the bright drawer.

It's a bit of a challenge fussy cutting the roof since a lot of it is guessing... but I'm getting better.

Don't have a pirate ship but I do have a pirate tiny house!

Tiny Houses: Bold and Bright

After the 1930s pastels, I got out the bright bin and went to town.

The black & white prints were first used for a banner for my daughter.

The butterfly fabric in this tiny house was a small scrap... what you see is all I had.

Dagnabbit!  What is this? A thread convention???

I have way too much of these fabrics in stash... I need to think up a project to use them up.

This was a stretch but I really wanted to use the roof print.

These prints look soft and summery to me...

...especially since this last tiny house reminds me of sherbert!

Tiny Houses: 1930s repro version

While I love 1930s reproduction fabrics, I struggle to coordinate and/or match them.

I suppose I could just grab a handful of these scraps and use whatever I get.

I guess it's one of my quirks... matching fabrics...

Paper-piecing is going more smoothly but I can't recommend it when when one is not 100%...

...trying to get the right size fabric scrap can be challenging!  Too easy to misalign or cut too small...  but it can be fixed thankfully.

And, of course, the glaring errors as just so very clear in photos...  *rolling eyes*     (I am getting better, slowly but surely!)

Tiny Houses: Batik Series

In order to keep fabric scraps organized and not all jumbled up in one huge heap to dig around in...

...I'm working with smaller heaps, one heap at a time.

These are the first two tiny houses in batiks....   more to come!

Best laid plans....

July... an entire month off work.  Lots planned, including company.  Then you get sick.   A week out and I'm on the road to recovery but it was too much excitement for this ole gal.  Very little sewing was accomplished but I was able to finish up my "Night Series" of the tiny house project this weekend.

Not my best sewing or paper-piecing...

...but there was satisfaction at finishing each block.

There is some of the "night sky" fabric left...

...so I will make some more "night" blocks at some point.  Don't want more fabric to end up in the scrap bins!

So... all together now!

It's fun seeing fabric scraps from previous projects being put to good use.  Now... on to the batik series!

Tiny House Block #13

The granddaughters are here visiting so not much sewing is happening; however, Chloe, who actually does a very good job, selected the fabrics for her tiny house.  She wanted a night-time house once she saw the fabrics I had pulled for the sky/background...

She was interested in how a tiny house was made and sat right by me while I made this one.   Mebbe I'll get her interested in sewing some year....

Two New Houses: # 11 & 12

While I'll never "love" paper-piecing, it is fun and a bit addictive...

I've started playing with colors "not in the same scrap bin" and I kinda like it.

Not sure what this last one reminds me of... a guard house?  A circus tent?  Whatever, I'm having a good time....

Blocks # 9 & 10

I'm able to make two tiny houses a day easily... but then I'm off work.

I'm learning about putting fabrics together... sometimes more successfully than others.

Variety is the spice of life, yes?

I'm having difficulty coming up with fun titles for another post about the tiny houses....

....but I am having big fun playing with fabric scraps!

Tiny Houses: Nos. 5 & 6

While the yard crew is working diligently to cut back all the over-grown whatevers, I made two more tiny houses.

Even with the 1800's repro fabrics, the houses are still wonky!

One of the issues when working on a long-term project with lots and lots of blocks is:  Where are you going to keep them so they won't get messed up or lost?
