All Together Now: Civil War Blocks So Far

After the last of the company left, I pinned up all the Civil War blocks on my make-do design wall.  Pinning is necessary b/c the act of putting up one block is guaranteed to knock off another, which in turns brings down at least another block.

The blocks may or may not be in their final arrangement but I can now see what colors I need more of and whether or not a block needs to be light or dark overall.

I've decided on an 7-block by 8-block grid, so I'll have to select several of my favorites of which to make extras.

I will be using this print for the border...  and will need to figure out fabric for the sashing.  I'm currently thinking of a small cream or tan print like this one:

Ideas/suggestions welcome...

They look so good all together.
Great job of sticking to it and making them each week.
I have only printed off the patterns.

  5. I think the lightly printed fabric will be excellent for the sashing. And the variety of prints/colors in the blocks make this quilt terrific.

  7. Wow, your blocks look so great! I was hoping to finally start some of these once I was totally caught up on my Chronicles blocks. Seeing the collection you have is really inspiring me to get started and hit my CW scrap stash.

What a great sampler this is going to make!

  8. Wow! Twelve more made since I played on the wall! This will be a most gorgeous and special quilt... and even more so if med-dark blue wins over tan ;-) The block on bottom right corner is one of my favs. And I can see the 'X' factor repetition and how the star pattern repeats ~ you'll have fun arranging!

  11. I thinking a splash of multicolored neon polka pots might work...but nothing too splashy/flashy.

  12. It's wonderful to see them all laid out like that. Beautiful border print you have chosen. Isn't it fun to see your accomplishment all laid out like that, remember the difficult ones, the ones you love, and the ones you would never do again.

  15. Hello Fred,

Congratulations. This quilt is amazing. I have enjoyed watching it grow week by week. The fabric you have chosen for the sashings will set it all of. Good luck with the extra block making and finishing.
    Happy sewing.

  17. Ooh, your blocks are looking great. I love seeing all the blocks together like this. I like your fabric. Lay some fabric down and put a few blocks on it with about two inches showing in between each block so you can see if you like it. I've got to get busy and catch up on my blocks. I'm not sure how I'm going to sash mine yet. There are alot of suggestions on her site for layouts and I'm still deciding.

  20. Your blocks look great and I love love your border fabric. The sashing fabric is lovely but to make sure it is exactly what you want why don't you pick out several and lay the blocks on them? You might be surprised to see that a blue matching the boarder fabric might really make the blocks pop. My sister always picks a fabric I wouldn't consider and she is almost always right.

  23. This has been such a fun project to see you put together. I guess you are almost finished with the blocks. What a stunning quilt this is going to make. I do like your choice of border fabric. I'm not very good with suggestions. I do like the neutral sashing idea.
