Self-Discipline

I love starting a new quilt... the planning, the acquisition of fabrics and materials, cutting into fabric, watching the blocks come together and patterns take shape...  so much so that I've started quite a few quilts this year that I hadn't planned on making.  However, from the get-go of my quilting adventures, I determined that I would finish every quilt I started and not have a pile of UFOs.  I'm doing pretty good so far.

I have some beautiful new fabric...

...and I want to start the Cowabunga Floribunda quilt.  But looking around, I see only one of the four placemats quilted and none finished.

I can't clear the sewing machine table until I get the placemats finished...

I also need to clear the cutting table to cut into the new fabrics...  but today, the next Civil War block has been posted and I will need some of the fabrics piled on the table for the new block...

Additionally, I have not completed the Smokey Mtn Stars quilt top... it's still hanging on the design wall...  columns need sewing together and 2 borders added...

I found three definitions for self-discipline...

Self-discipline is:
  • the ability to reject instant gratification in favor of something better,
  • giving up of instant pleasure and satisfaction for a higher goal, and
  • the ability of the individual to stick to actions, thoughts, and behavior, which lead to improvement and success.
True... going back to work this past week seriously interfered with progress on these projects.  However, I need to finish up these projects before starting another...  and what better motivator to get these projects done than starting a new quilt?

See, Chris?  I can stick to my goal...

  2. I'm going to pretend that I didn't see this whole blog about s... d....... I made the same promise to myself when I started quilting and i only managed to keep it for maybe 2 years.

I choose to view starting new things as creatively using my mind to ward off dimentia in the future. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Have a great day. Selina

  5. Your sewing machine table and cutting table look like my torch 'n glass table and assembly table, just a different creative medium...but all the same: Lots of color and unfinished business. But oh, the excitement and "pull' of new ideas sometimes prove too much! Here's to doing the right thing!

  6. I seem to be having a "little" issue with self-discipline these days. It can be so difficult sometimes to resist all of the wonderful projects/ideas that we see everyday!
