My First Try at Paper Piecing

After watching Jennifer Ofenstein's paper piecing tutorial (link), I just had to try it!  I found one of Ms Ofenstein's free paper piecing patterns on Craftsy entitled "Mug o' Love" (link)...  and hoped it would be manageable for a newbie.

I won't say my seam ripper didn't see any use but things went more smoothly as I went along.   I didn't do a great job with fabric selection...  and I think some echo stitching of the heart shape will make it more noticeable.    Not sure what I'm going to do with this... but it was fun making it.  This type of thing generates wayyyyyyy more threads than regular block piecing!

  1. It looks good to me Freda, I noticed the mug and the heart so you did a great job.

  2. Amen on the threads!
Great work, my friend! But watch out--it can be addictive. : )
Why not have that mug provide a rug for a mug? : )

  4. But it is so worth it. Just wait til you do something a little more complicated where points meet up. The percision is great. And look at how even your seams are. It's like applique, some people love it and some don't. You did a great job.

  6. It's so pretty (and it made me smile, too!) but now we've gone from simple connect-the-dots to...simultaneous equations. ;)

  7. I love doing paper piecing but I have to admit that it takes much longer to sew than traditional blocks so. Definitely not something to do if you need a gift in a hurry.

  8. It turned out great! I've done a little paper piecing. A few of the blocks for the road trip quilt along I did used it. Isn't it great that there are so many new things to learn in quilting. It never gets old.

  9. Your piece looks great, but you're right - a lot more thread cutting to contend with.

  10. I love your fabric selection! Good job on the PP.....it is a easy technique, but time consuming and eats up lots of thread.
