Grandmother's Choice: Votes for Women

Barbara Brackman's new block of the week Grandmother's Choice: Votes for Women kicked off yesterday with the posting of the first block:  Grandmother's Choice!    In addition to interesting history of the fight for women's rights, including cool photos...  Ms Brackman posted four versions of this block for us to drool over...  uh... use as inspiration!

This is my first block, done in the Art Nouveau line by Blank Quilting (2009), which has been maturing in my stash.

The fabric selection part of making this block was the hardest.  I have a limited selection of fabrics... six prints and four solids... and it was tough.   I almost threw in the towel but that deeply ingrained steak of determination (aka: stubbornness) prevented me.

I am planning on making two blocks each week... one from this line of fabrics and a second from my stash of 1930s repro fabrics.

This ought to help keep me off the streets and out of trouble...

PS - You can check out the blocks others are making on the Grandmother's Choice Flickr group!

  1. Very pretty, Freda. Such pretty fabrics, but I know when I am working with a limited number of fabrics it is so hard to decide which ones to put in each block.

  6. You may have a limited selection, but they're good ones. That block is beautiful and the fabric you picked is perfect.

  10. Beautiful fabrics! I like the ones you picked for this block. I think I have narrowed down the prints I want to use, but I am not sure about the solids. I think mine may be pretty scrappy because I am determined to use only what I have, and I don't have a big stash of solids. Oh well. I am off to make the first block this afternoon.

  12. Your fabric matured very well as it is perfect for this quilt along. I ordered a pack of fat eighths of Kansas Troubles, going to make the first block using them and see how it looks. Might be too dark, will wait and see when they come, have a stash of 30"s if all else fails. Checked the Flicker group out, just about anything goes.

  14. I do like your block. In fact, you've inspired me to consider joining the group. Although I haven't made up my mind for sure yet, I love the focus of this project--probably because not only do I quilt, but I'm old enough to have talked with women who remembered too well not being able to vote.
