Grandmothers Choice #4: Kansas Sunflower

This week's block was Kansas Sunflower...  not only does it have LOTS of tiny Y-seams but also has lots of little diamonds and triangles!  (Thank goodness the curved seams aren't a problem because of all those years and years of dressmaking.)

I almost didn't make this block but then.... I remembered that part of doing this BOW is "learning something new." The first block took 3 hours of trying to figure it out...

I finished it... it's pretty bad.... but I got it done!    It took me at least 4 hours to recover and be willing to make a second one.

The second block was easier.... not "easy" but easier.   I could not get the center to lie flat and tried to press it into submission.   I'm hoping that the fabric will relax in a couple of days.

Nope... I didn't give up tho...   now I need me some easier blocks to work on.    I certainly hope Ms Brackman is posting the really HARD blocks early 'cause if she's saving harder ones for later...  I'm in BIG trouble.

  1. It's always gives a lot of satisfaction to learn something new. What a great sunflowers you've made. I especially love the purple one.

  4. Love the purple one, great fabric combo. You learned something new....is it that you don't like so many small pieces or the inset points? I salute you because I would have found so many excuses to run away, and probably substituted a 9 patch in its place.

  5. I think they both look great. I try to stay away from Y seams. I love the purple block.

  6. Y seams are not easy. The only block in my Farmer's Wife quilt which didn't make it into the final quilt had Y seams which, even after pressing within an inch of its life, didn't make it lie flat. Blech! Yours look a *lot* better than mine did. :o)

  10. Freda, looks like you did a fine job!!! I've elected to hand piece mine - don't do well with that small of triangles and "Y" seams on the machine. So maybe while I'm watching the telly this week, I'll get it done!!

    Have a great one!!

  11. I think they turned out fine, but I know exactly what you mean, as I shared with you about the road trip quilt along blocks. Some of mine turned out pretty bad, but I just kept going. I do feel like I learned some new skills though. LOL

  14. I am impressed, as I already said. Mine is still in pieces on the cutting table. Maybe I will try sewing on it a little in the morning. I think I am using my out of town guests as an excuse to put this one off. It just looks so hard. Whine, whine, whine.

  15. I think you made two great blocks, when I saw this block come up my heart sank, but I think nearly everyone took up the challenge, and you made two, well done you.
