Auditioning Sashing and Cornerstones

I would like to sash-as-I-go for the 1930s Grandmothers Choice blocks, even though I know it locks me in... so I am auditioning the sashing and cornerstones before I commit...

Not the best photo but me... perched on a ladder trying to take a photo... what can you expect?   I'm just glad I didn't fall off the ladder...

Here's a close up of the cornerstone (and border) fabric...

The blocks are on the dining room/work table so I can think about this for a bit...   I'm also debating about using a narrower sashing as well.    The blue strips are 2.5" and not sewn so they look wide.

Comments and suggestions welcome...

  1. I think that sashing and those cornerstones look surprisingly good together, if you had shown me the two fabrics separately I don't think I would have thought they would work but they absolutely do!

  3. These look great together with your blocks. I also like the width of the sashing. This will be a great looking quilt when all is said and done.

  4. I'm thinking about doing the same with mine, although I think I might wait till I have a couple of rows worth of blocks done before I actually commit to the sashing and cornerstone fabric that I'm thinking about using.

I like the fabrics you have chosen, they look good with the other 30's fabrics you are using,

  5. Love the buttons and bows for the cornerstones....just too cute. I think the width of border is good...once it is sewn we will like it better. The proportion is right for the size of the blocks. I think the sash as you go is great idea.....because I hate doing sashing for some reason.

  6. LOVE IT!!! That cornerstone fabric is adorable!! It is nice to assemble as we go!! Are you doing the same (assembling as we go) for the purple/green version?

Have a day filled with love, joy & peace!!

  7. Look at the detail on those buttons and bows! What a cute fabric find. I have a hard time sashing as I go. Even though it brings the completion faster, I like to see the placement of color distributed where I want. It is that control issue again, lol ~

  8. I love the fabrics you choose. I must admit that at first I thought the sashing strips were too wide, but the more I look at it, the more I think I like it that way.

  9. these are all good choices. Since you have the previous BOW experience, you have that to draw on - you know if you are going to likes blocks sashed this way etc. Have you calculated the final size you want to get from this? I think sashing a 1/2 inch less would also work fine.

For mine, I'm not sure I'll put sashing or maybe even put them on point. So for not, I am going to make blocks and perhaps make some decisions 1/2 way through.

  10. I love the cornerstone fabric. So cute! I purchased some light batik the other day on sale to use as sashing for mine, but I am going to wait a little longer to see if I really want to use it. I can always use it for something else if I decide to go a different direction. I like the fabrics you have selected. Have you decided on anything for the other quilt?
