After my daughter left for a cute hair appt., I lured the grandbabies into my sewing room and asked them to pick out fabrics they liked from the scrap bins for a doll quilt. They actually like that kind of thing... and are fairly good at picking colors that go together.
First, I had Emma, who is 9yo, press the fabric strips she selected and showed her how to sew a 1/4" seam. Took a little practice to move from me manning the foot control to doing it herself. I also had to introduce her to my seam ripper, asking her to please note that I keep it right beside the sewing machine because grandma uses it frequently!
By this time, Emma felt comfortable sewing straight lines and she worked steadily at quilting half the doll quilt. She became a bit distracted because her younger sister was playing a computer game behind her so she asked if I would finish the quilting. I don't blame her... straight-line quilting can be tedious.
Emma picked out the binding fabric and I bound her quilt for her.... then Maddie had to try it out!
Oh, I knew there would be creative fun afoot when grandma got her girls around her! Good job, Freda. Start 'em young!
ReplyDeleteSo sweet and cute, both the girls and the doll quilts. Love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun teaching the grandchildren new things. I taught Older Grandson(aged 3) how to extract orange juice the old fashioned way today -- he was so excited!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post! I love seeing new little ones enjoying quilting. I am very impressed with the 9 year old's attention in making most of her quilt! They are both sweet.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful little quilts! Very talented little quilters! Thank you for sharing this wonderful post : )
ReplyDeleteNow that,s the way we make/give special memories. You're a GREAT grandma!!!
ReplyDeleteYou have to lure them in your sewingroom.... I think that must de heaven on earth for them if I see what the're made there.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, you can be proud of them.
How sweet, quilters in the making.
ReplyDeleteOh, what fun these girls are to have in your sewing room! It's like discovering the fun of sewing all over again! There are no little girls in my life to share my sewing with.....I'm so jealous!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to spend an afternoon.
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to sew with my Grandma when she was around. I didn't have that "bug" until 5 years ago though. Your granddaughters will treasure these moments now and when they are older:)
ReplyDeleteGreat to see the young ones quilting. I quilt nearly every weekend with my granddaughter. She was nearly 9 when she started just as your grandchildren are. She will be 11 in a few weeks. It is wonderful to see her progress. We are each doing our own Crafts BOM 2013 and having a great time. Tell your grandkids great job!.
ReplyDeleteWonderful projects for the girls - they're so cute.

Such sweet, heartwarming photos. They did a great job!
ReplyDeleteYep. I was 9 years old when I would sit on my mom's lap and she would "drive" the sewing machine and help guide the fabric under the needle until I got the hang of it. Each one, teach one (or more!). What lovely pictures for the girls and the families to treasure! Well done.
