A (Partial) Finish

Now that my baby is home, I was able to finish up the last two of the 56 blocks for the Civil War quilt.

Block 52:  Christmas Wreath (or Star)

Because I was stubborn about not doing the applique blocks, I needed several extras for the 7x8 layout.   So...   I selected "Scotch Squares" for the final block in honor of all the folks from Scotland who settled in the Sandhills of North Carolina....  some of whom have a descendant who is an Empress!

True to my promise, I used only fabrics I had on hand.... this time raiding my favorite scraps, which as you can imagine were not the largest pieces I have left.

It was a challenge because I didn't have enough to be too choosy.  For example the outer four HSTs should use the brown background fabric found in the center square and the four small HSTs...  but hey!  You do what you gotta do!

Next... on to the borders!  I did mention I found another fabric for the borders, yes?

  1. I, too, have Scottish ancestry, but we are of the peasant variety. : ) (Could it be our stubborn Scot blood that keeps us from doing the applique blocks?)
I'd say you are showing amazing restraint in sticking to scraps on hand. I often say that is what I will do, but end up buying when I can't find what I want among my "scraps."
Good job on the blocks. I really like that border fabric.

  5. Good to see you back at "the wheel". Your fabric choice for the corner HSTs is excellent. I wouldn't have guessed it was a deviation if you hadn't said so.

  6. Love the blocks that you came up with. I think your machine must be very happy to be sewing again. I will be waiting to see how these blocks come together. Congratulations on sticking to using only scraps on hand.

  11. Love your substitute block, I don't think it matters that you have substituted other colours, I think that has been a continuous theme throughout the CW quilters and that is why we have made each block our own block.

  13. Both blocks turned out great. Good job using your fabrics on hand. I would never have guessed your HST's should have been a different color.
